This has led to an exhibition at the Imperial War Museum dedicated to the First World War.
It brings individual people out of anonymity by talking about them and telling their life stories.

The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich is hosting an exhibition about the war at sea.
Photographs, ship models and other objects offer personal insights into the fate of those involved in the conflict.
